Bullnose Steps FAQs
Bullnose steps are placed on the bottom step, or nose, of the stairs. These have a rounded design on the protruding edge of the stair tread, which sits atop the flat riser. This gives a finishing touch to your staircase, and adds a stylish element in one of the first places that your guests will look. It also adds extra protection from damage, by stopping impacts short of the riser where it could pierce through.
Bullnose steps are placed in the same way that any other step is placed. Begin by cutting the bullnose step tread and riser down to the appropriate size. You’ll want the nose of the tread to hang over the edge of the riser.
Simply place the riser against the staircase frame, and drill your screws through the riser, making sure to place them so that they bury into the frame behind. Once in place, you can lay the bullnose stair tread on top and drill down into the frame.
As the frame will be hidden from view once both parts are in place, we recommend measuring each individually and marking the drill hole positions before drilling the riser into place.
While a staircase doesn’t absolutely need to have a bullnose step and there are many designs to choose from, there are many reasons why including a bullnose step is a good idea:
• Improved safety
• Increases tread longevity
• Better tread visibility
• Added style and finish
