Handrail Fittings FAQs
Yes. Building regulations state that handrails must be provided at the sides of flights where there is a drop of more than 600mm. Following these guidelines, you can have a maximum of two steps before you need to insert a staircase handrail.
There are specific building codes related to the spacing of hand brackets for handrails. Most building codes specify that staircase brackets should be between 36 and 48 inches apart, or about 3 to 4 feet.
A staircase handrail must be continuous, starting at the nosing of the upper landing and extending at a minimum to the nosing of the lowest step or ‘riser’. In addition, for optimal safety, the handrail should run the entire length of the nosing line wherever possible.
The main benefits of installing metal handrail fittings include:
• Requires minimal maintenance.
• Easier to cut and shape into different designs and patterns
• Creates a stylish look
• Improved durability makes it one of the safest for use on handrails and railings
• Versatile
At Jackson Woodturners, we recommend that you apply Treatex Hardwax Oil to wooden staircase handrails as it is quick-drying and hardwearing. Hard wax oils contain a blend of oils and waxes designed to protect wood including linseed oil, sunflower oil and beeswax.
